FCA Targets Finfluencers in Crackdown on Unlawful Financial Promotions

Recent studies by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) show that over 60% of young adults aged 18-29 follow financial influencers online, with nearly three-quarters trusting their advice. This alarming trend highlights the potential scale of consumer risk when unqualified individuals promote financial products, often leading to substantial financial losses.

The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) has launched a targeted crackdown on financial influencers, or "finfluencers," promoting financial products without proper authorisation. The regulator's action aims to protect consumers, particularly young people, who are increasingly exposed to risky or misleading financial advice online.

As part of its enforcement, the FCA has issued 38 alerts on social media accounts suspected of unlawful promotions and interviewed 20 influencers under caution.

Steve Smart, Executive Director of Enforcement and Market Oversight at the FCA, said:

“Finfluencers are trusted by the people who follow them, often young and potentially vulnerable individuals. They need to ensure that the products they promote comply with regulations, or they risk putting their followers' finances in jeopardy.”

At Debt Free Advice we fully support the FCA’s efforts to hold finfluencers accountable and protect consumers. Matt Dronfield, Managing Director of Debt Free Advice, emphasised:
