Debt Free Advice is breaking barriers to debt advice, reaching more people than ever through innovation and community collaboration. As highlighted in the Money and Pensions Service (MaPS) Funded Debt Advice Impact Report 2023–24, Debt Free Advice has become a leader in making debt advice accessible to those who need it most.

A Debt Free Advice client was featured in the report, Fatima’s story is a powerful example of how debt advice services can transform their quality of life. Struggling with over £15,000 in debt and facing significant mental health challenges, she turned to Debt Free Advice for help. Through a flexible approach that included video appointments and support from local partners, Debt Free Advice helped Fatima regain financial stability and hope. “You didn’t just help with my debts—you helped me see hope again,” she shared.

Matt Dronfield, Managing Director of Debt Free Advice, reflects on the significance of this recognition and the importance of continued innovation in reaching those most in need.

“Being recognised in the MaPS Impact Report highlights the importance of making debt advice accessible to everyone. Innovations like our Video Advice Kiosks are breaking barriers, reaching those who might otherwise struggle to access support. As financial challenges grow, we remain committed to evolving our services to empower individuals and strengthen communities.

In partnership with MaPS, Debt Free Advice has installed 40 video advice kiosks across London, embedding debt advice services in trusted, local spaces. These kiosks, located in libraries, community centres and even HMP Brixton, ensure that individuals can access expert advice in places they feel comfortable.

At HMP Brixton, prisoners now have private access to financial advice. In just three months, 45 individuals utilised the kiosk to address debts, apply for Debt Relief Orders and create manageable repayment plans. One user shared, “I never thought I’d get advice while in prison. The kiosk made it easy and I felt like someone cared about helping me sort my debts.”

This innovation has been a game-changer. Across all locations, over 1,200 appointments were booked within six months of launch. The kiosks also earned Debt Free Advice the Best Service Delivery Innovation award at the Third Sector Awards 2024, recognising our transformative impact.

The MaPS report emphasises the importance of community-based debt advice and this is a core approached led by Debt Free Advice. By working with local organisations and tailoring services to specific communities, Debt Free Advice ensures no one is left behind.

The MaPS report also reveals the broader reach of Debt Free Advice and similar services:

  • 86% of clients expressed satisfaction with their experience
  • 78% took actions to resolve their debt problems after receiving advice
  • 47% reported improved mental health

These numbers highlights the effectiveness of Debt Free Advice’s approach in addressing not only financial challenges but also the emotional toll of debt.

Our efforts to amplify reach aligns with MaPS’s vision of a modernised, inclusive debt advice sector. By combining community partnerships with technological innovation, Debt Free Advice is setting the standard for how debt advice can evolve to meet the changing needs of clients.

Our work demonstrates that accessible, empathetic debt advice can transform lives. Whether through video kiosks, AI-powered tools or community partnerships, Debt Free Advice is ensuring that no one is left behind.
